What Is Collagen?

One of the most important elements in younger looking healthy skin is an adequate supply of Collagen in our skin because the quality of the skin’s strength and structure comes from Collagen. But what is Collagen? It is a type of protein that is present in every part of the body.

When we are young, the efficiency of our cell renewal is very high. Our skin is supple and hydrated, even when we mistreat it with over exposure to the sun-causing photo damage, wind damage, damage that comes from the elements or contamination from our environment. Because of this efficiency, even childhood wounds heal and sometimes without ever leaving a scar.

However, as we age something happens to the efficiency of cell reproduction. Although we replace 100% of every cell in our bodies quite regularly, these cells do not regenerate naturally like they did when we were younger. They require some help from science in order to produce Collagen at the same levels of integrity as when we were younger. Because of this slow degradation, and the less efficient generation of cells, we begin to show signs of aging.

Scientists now know what a healthy cell looks like and they know what it takes to replicate most cells. This opens a lot of possibilities in the reversal of the aging process, at least as it relates to skin and the healthy, youthful appearance of skin.

Collagen is the main component of connective tissue and it’s the major protein found in the Extracellular Matrix (ECM). It works along with Elastin to literally hold the body together. It gives different body tissues their form, firmness and strength, while Elastin, as it’s name hints, provides the flexibility the body needs for mobility. Collagen has been identified in 30 different types of collagen genes found in the human genome. Its function remains almost the same, holding cells in their place, which seems to coincide with that old adage “a place for everything and everything in its place.”

There are several anti-aging optional treatments, which deal with the replacement or replenishing of the loss of collagen which occurs as we age. For example, Collagen injections have been used for many years to fill in the valleys and canyons caused by its shortage. Topical creams can be applied that contain forms of Collagen easily synthesized by the skin. Either way, there are remedies for the loss of Collagen, if that is the cause of your wrinkles.
